PayPal Suspends Wikileaks Donation Account

PayPal has suspended Wikileak's Donation Account following a breach of contract. On Saturday, December 4, 2010, PayPal issued a statement at the official PayPal blog which read: "PayPal has permanently restricted the account used by WikiLeaks due to a violation of the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy, which states that our payment service cannot be used for any activities that encourage, promote, facilitate, or instruct others to engage in illegal activity. We've notified the account holder of this action."

PayPal's termination of the Wikileaks business contract follows Amazon's severance of Web services and ties to the whistle-blowing organization. Wikileaks operations were also put in jeopardy on Thursday following a massive increase in traffic and hackers through their underlying domain

PayPal once offered a payment service for Wikileaks donations page where funds from supporters were collected via credit card, bank transfer, or through the mail. PayPal also cut off founder Julian Assange's fund.
